The YouTube Video-sharing Service – Video-sharing Made Easy
The YouTube video-sharing service has become one of the most popular Web 2.0 and user-generated content hosting services. The YouTube video-sharing service was started in February, 2005 when the domain got activated although the actual site was not up for a public preview till May 2005. It is the brain child of three people who earlier had worked for PayPal. The YouTube video-sharing service was started in a garage in San Mateo by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim.
After some time, YouTube moved into its present headquarters in San Bruno, The headquarters seem to have been lucky because the YouTube video-sharing service which had hitherto been running on angel investor funds was in for a big change. In October 2006, Google Inc. went public with the announcement that they had taken the decision to take over the Youtube video-sharing service. On November13, 2006, Google took over YouTube for a price worth US$ 1.65 billion in Google stock.
By the summer of 2006, the YouTube video-sharing service had reached the fifth position in the most-visited website rankings. A study done on July 16, 2006, revealed that the YouTube video-sharing service was having 100 million viewings of video clips and in a period of 24 hours, 65000 new video clips were being uploaded. Another report by Nielson/NetRatings revealed that YouTube had logged 20 million visitors a month.
This has been possible due to a number of reasons. First of all, unless the video has been rated to contain certain attributes such as sexually explicit material or has been marked private, anyone can view it, without the need to bother about the registration process. The YouTube video-sharing service makes use of Adobe's Flash Player, which is available for almost all the Internet platforms ranging from the Windows OS based devices to high-powered Linux servers. The service does not require special media codecs to be installed on the target device. The video codec used by the YouTube video-sharing service is H.263 (Sorenson Spark) and the audio is encoded in the mp3 format. The source video for the YouTube video-sharing service can be in Windows Media Video format, AVI format, MOV (QuickTime) format, MPEG, or MP4 format. All videos are first converted by YouTube to the flash video format used by YouTube. They are then accessible to anybody in the world from YouTube's own website. The USP of the YouTube video-sharing service, however, is that it allows people to embed videos in their own site. Thus, while a user's website will have the video in their Web page, he will neither pay for its storage nor for its bandwidth. Thus, the YouTube video-sharing service has brought streaming video to a completely new level.
